New Beginnings

Layla stepped out of her rental car and felt the crushed rock crack beneath her feet. Montana was far from New York City, the place she had called home for many years. She was leaving behind the city lights and faded dreams. Layla had a knot in her stomach, wondering if she had just made the craziest mistake of her life, bailing on her familiar comfort zone, although uncomfortable, for the Montana countryside.

 

She came out to Montana not only for her uncle’s funeral but also to receive the inheritance he had left for her. The lakehouse she had loved as a child and a fair amount of money was not a gift left to her with the hope of starting a new chapter in life.

Her uncle had paid great attention to her needs over the years though she didn’t realize it until now. He had hoped that her future would hold the life she deserved even in his passing. But, instead, she had lived trapped by anxiety and sadness haunting her since the failed relationship with Nick, the player she affectionately named him, and her hairstyling career that had become too routine.

The draw of those city lights had become a replant somewhere along the way. She had never planned to leave the city, even when she was lonely and bitter, but fate stepped in, and Montana was on her horizon.

She was sad to lose her uncle but simultaneously taken back by his generous gift. Layla made the journey to Montana, hoping for a fresh start and embracing a new beginning. Swinging open the café door, a handy bell announced her arrival. Layla walked into the café to meet her uncle’s lawyer and to get the keys to her new home.

Hurried but holding her emotions at bay, Layla sat down and ordered a coffee. After a few moments, the inheritance paperwork was signed, and the keys were in her hand as she headed to the funeral for her final goodbyes.

A close friend of her uncle but not remembered by Layla at first, Leo had never left Montana. From birth, he had been raised to carry the generational responsibility of inheriting his family land and keeping it as a working farm. However, Leo had added a twist as he had turned the farm into an animal rescue.

Leo has a heart the size of the Montana sky and shares it freely with the animals he rescues. Having lost in love, he turned his passions to the quirky set of pets he had gathered along the way. Mo, his llama, is his best friend and tends to keep the rest in order. Leo was at the funeral to say his final goodbye to a mentor who had taught him many things about being a man since he was a boy.

After a few odd moments at the funeral, Layla and Leo reconnect after decades of separation. The reconnection does not come easy nor without many twists and turns. These two childhood friends decide to attempt love again, with several complications along the way. But, under the beautiful Montana sky, hope is reborn in the most unusual ways.
